These series of images produced by Robert Smithson show a plotted route on Cayuga Lake in New York State. Rather than document the beautiful surroundings or use the terrain to recreate an image or object like the works of Andy Goldsworthy, here, Smithson has simply placed a mirror within the chosen environment to reflect nature back at itself.
An important message conveyed through this work is that of self reflection(excuse the pun). We all so frantically try to gain inspiration from our cultures and environments yet we have a constant volcano of thoughts and ideas that have organically been produced in our minds.
Although, I have just got this theory from another artists piece of work, so you could say; I am chatting utter bullshit...
